Nearby cities and villages Carassai has changed its name numerous times throughout its history.
Different names are used in documents to indicate the site where the village stands today. In the Middle Ages, its name was Castrum Guardiae, but the people called it Carrascale or Carnassale.
The Castle of Carrascale was mentioned in documents together with the Castle of Camporo. Both were destroyed in the first half of the 14th century for rebelling against the Church. A few years later, only Carrascale was rebuilt.
Two nuclei are currently evident: one of feudal origin, known as the "Old Castle" and one of medieval origin, known as the "New Castle", built in the 15th century by the people of Fermo and attached to the feudal village. The 'Old Castle' is the oldest settlement, characterised by the picturesque winding of the narrow streets, typical of the feudal period, and has its religious reference in the bell tower of the Church of San Lorenzo, the "New Castle" is characterised by the relatively larger width of the straight streets and the houses of municipal origin, with a secular wound in the recently reconstructed Clock Tower.
Near the "New Castle" are the remains of fortified walls from the 14th and 15th centuries: the so-called "Camminamenti Militari".
