VILLAGE OF MASSIGNANO

Nearby cities and villages Some local historians claim that Massignano was founded by the Sabines in pre-Roman times; according to others, it was a suburb of the ancient and extensive Roman city of 'Cupra Maritima'.
If, however, traces of pre-Roman life are few and confused, the same cannot be said of evidence from Roman times.

In fact, metal and pottery artefacts, a warehouse and an aqueduct have been found in some quarters of the area, burial caves and installations of Roman 'villae'. Since 1168, the existence of the mighty Forcella Castle is documented (of which part of the tower and some ruins remain today) built by the Ghibelline counts of Aspromonte and Montefiore and passed later in the hands of the Bishop of Fermo.

In 1334, it was attacked and sacked by Rinaldo da Monteverde, tyrant of Fermo, and from then on it was disputed alternately between Ascoli Piceno and Fermo.
In 1532, the people of Ascoli conquered Massignano, which from then on remained peacefully under papal rule until of the French occupation in 1797. Restored to government in 1816, it was one of the towns in the Marche that fought the hardest for Italian independence.
