The territory of Cupra Marittima, the core of the ancient 'ager cuprensis' of Augustan memory,
is located in the southern and coastal sector of the Marche region, in the province of Ascoli Piceno.
It is bounded to the north by the territory of Massignano to the south and to the west by Grottammare and Ripatransone, and to the east by the Adriatic Sea.
Cupra Marittima (a name derived from the ancient Roman city of 'Cupra Maritima', already recorded in the "Tabula Peutingeriana") extends approximately 5 km along the coast and 4 km inland, assuming an almost triangular configuration over an area of 17 square kilometres. The area has altitudes ranging from sea level to approximately 260 metres above sea level at "Casino Bruti" to the southwest; morphologically presents itself with a series of valleys incised and modelled by exogenous agents, placed parallel to each other and orthogonal to the current coastline.
...
The presence in the Cupra Marittima area of many floristic species with a steno-Mediterranean distribution, as well as the spread of residual strips of holm oak forest, testifying to the potential of this forest formation in the area, would suggest that this area belongs to the Mediterranean floristic region, or in any case located at its northern limit.
