TOWN OF GROTTAMMARE

TOWN OF GROTTAMMARE

Nearby cities and villages In ancient times, it was called Cuprae Fanum because near the mouth of the Tesino river (where the church of S. Martino was later erected) stood the temple of the goddess Cupra, protector of fertility in Picenum times.

Regarding the present settlement, the earliest records of Grottammare date back to the 7th century. Grottammare was held in great consideration by Fermo, which placed it among the 8 first-class castles out of the 130 existing ones. It was only after 1783 that the inhabitants of Grottammare began to build their houses along the coastal strip, driven by the numerous and sudden landslides.

Here, on 12 October 1860, Victor Emmanuel II and a committee of Neapolitan notables met, in view of the penetration of the Savoy army into southern Italy. Grottammare was the birthplace of FELICE PERETTI (1521-1590), who became pope under the name of Sixtus V, and the world-famous artist PERICLE FAZZINI (1913-1987), author of the grandiose Resurrection (Sala delle Udienze in the Vatican).
