Nearby cities and villages It is one of the oldest and most important centres in the province of Ascoli Piceno, (approximately 5,000 inhabitants); it has been a city and diocese since 1571.
One of its main features is its rich historical-artistic heritage with six museums: art gallery-gallery, archaeological diocesan sacred art, potter's and whistler's, rural and craft civilisation, historical-ethnographic with oploteca; in addition: archives, libraries, monumental palaces and churches, the historic 'Mercantini' theatre, the open-air 'delle Fonti' theatre, medieval walls with the 'Corte delle Fonti', the narrowest alleyway in Italy and perhaps the world (cm 43). It enjoys such a panorama (Monte Conero, Gran Sasso, Gargano) that it is called the 'Belvedere of Piceno'. It is a pleasant resort town 12 km from the Adriatic Sea.
